Each year on June 14th, we celebrate Flag Day. Here are some fun facts about our National Flag.  

Flag Day

 

~ The US Flag was adopted on June 14, 1777, by resolution of the Continental Congress.

~ Flag Day was first unofficially observed beginning on June 14, 1877, with the flag flying at public buildings for the occasion.

~ School teachers were instrumental in popularizing a formal “Flag Day” the first to officially celebrate the June 14 Flag Day – BJ Cigrand on June 14, 1885, and George Balch in 1889.

~ The term “Flag Day” first came in 1893, coined by historian Colonel J. Granville Leach.

~ In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that throughout the nation, every community should observe Flag Day on June 14 with special patriotic exercises.

~ President Harry Truman signed a bill making June 14 the permanent day of observance in 1949.

~ Flag Day is not a federal holiday; however many places hold Flag Day parades, and Pennsylvania observes Flag Day as a state holiday.

~ An expert on flags and their history is called a “vexillogist”
