LED is short for light-emitting diode which is a semiconductor device that emits visible light when an electric current passes through it. LEDs are designed to be more efficient, durable, versatile, and longer lasting than the tradition incandescents.  The popularity of LED has led to mass productions and subsequently lower prices.  As the cost continues to decrease, the case for retrofitting becomes more and more irresistible.

LEDs use less electricity than CFLs and incandescents. An average LED bulb requires 10W, while a CFL needs 14W and an incandescent, 60W. Ultimately, the less wattage used, the lower the electricity bill. For example, at 30 minutes a day, an incandescent bulb will use $1.48 in electricity while and a LED bulb will only use $.25. LED bulbs use 50%-90% less electricity than traditional incandescent or fluorescent bulbs!

LED remains cool to the touch despite being used for several hours, because the heat produced is absorbed into a heat sink. On the other hand, incandescent bulbs produce light by using electricity to heat a metal filament until it becomes white. As a result, incandescent releases 90% of their energy as heat.  Therefore, during the summer time, LEDs can save heaps of money on air conditioning costs.

How can LED cut maintenance cost?

LED lighting requires minimal maintenance work as LEDs are impervious to vibration and breakage. Since the lifespan of LED is much longer than other conventional lightings – offering up to 100,000 hours, it is guaranteed that there will be savings from re-lamping costs. LED is estimated to last up to 10 times longer than fluorescents and about 50 times longer than incandescents. Due to its’ longevity, it will inevitably reduce material and labor costs.

Having a parking lot outage is not as simple as a kitchen light outage. It requires scheduling someone with a tall truck, the right training, and equipment to come out and fix it. Light outages may seem like a minuscule problem at first, but the diagnosing and repair process can be time consuming and costly.

Why is LED considered environmental friendly?

LEDs do not contain any mercury which means it will not produce any hazardous waste causing disposal expenditures. They contain absolutely no harmful substances and is virtually 100% recyclable

How does LED provide better lighting?

Unlike metal-halides or other light fixtures, LED maintains 90% of its lumen output.  Lumen is the SI unit of luminous flux, equal to the amount of light emitted per second. The higher the lumen output, the brighter the light.  As time goes by, light fixtures will inescapably age and decrease their output. The exquisite thing about LED is their ability to uphold their initial lumen output – lasting longer than any other types of lamps out there.

Another reason why LED is the superior choice is because they light up quickly and will continue to shine bright through all 4 seasons. LED is not sensitive to cold temperatures because they do not contain mercury. Lamps with contents of mercury will take longer to light up, and dim or change its’ color in extreme weather conditions. This is because at low temperatures, mercury is in the form of liquid droplets instead of vapor and mercury vapor is what is needed to produce light.

LED lighting can also improve safety and awareness as it can help drivers see better by minimizing glare and lighting pollution thus enhancing safety for pedestrians and other motorists.
